Twip of the Day – Killing Basement Mold
Basement mold is a serious problem. Mold is able to be removed, but easily returns, even when you take the necessary steps in cleaning. Mold is hazardous to the health of any occupants, and causes damage to nearly any organic material. Killing the mold that is already visible is an easy job. Borax solutions, available at many hardware stores, can take care of any mold you find, even mold on porous surfaces. Also, borax doesn’t give off harmful fumes, bleach does as well as many other cleaning agents. Borax is still toxic, so keep children and pets away from the mix. When mixing borax mix one cup borax for every gallon of water. Apply this mixture to a sponge or paper towel, and wipe the effected area. In the most serious cases, you need to give up on cleaning altogether and simply remove the moldy materials completely and replace them. One of the essential elements mold needs to survive and thrive is humidity. Since you just cleaned the mold off the walls, you want to prevent it from coming back. Installing a dehumidifier will go a long way to helping you toward this goal. Sometimes, a dehumidifier isn’t enough to do the job correctly. In cases where this happens, you most likely have much more serious problems than mold or high basement humidity. You should check all basement pipes for leaks, cracks, and other problems. In addition, a leak in another area of your home could drain into your basement, causing the problem. If you find the problem area, and can’t solve the issue alone, or if you can’t find out what’s wrong, you need to contact a professional mold remediation service. Mar-flex recommends DryPatrol for these jobs.

Twip of the Day – Waterproofing a Basement Floor
Waterproofing your basement floor is necessary. This process isn’t complicated, but will take time and effort to complete. The first thing you must do to waterproof your basement floor is to inspect the floor for any cracking. If you have cracks in the floor, water will seep up through them. For small cracks, use caulk to fill it with concrete. For the larger cracks, you’ll need to patch it with a patching compound. After the patching compound has taken the time to dry, you can start applying a primer to the surface of the concrete. Make sure to buy a primer that is designed specifically for basement floors. Use a paintbrush or roller to apply the primer to the floor. Then allow this primer to dry for a few hours before moving on. After the primer completely dries, you can start applying waterproofing paint. You should look for an epoxy paint that is specifically designed to waterproof concrete. Again, use a paintbrush or roller to apply this paint, and then allow the first coat to dry before applying more. Apply up to three coats to maximize the effectiveness of the paint. Just make sure each coat dries thoroughly before the next. Once all of them dry, you can begin using your newly waterproofed basement floor.

Twip of the Day – Finding the Leaks
Damp basement walls happen because water seeps through the walls. This water damages structural integrity, and causes mold and mildew, which leads to respiratory and other health issues. This is the reason why its imperative to fix any basement issues before they become serious problems. The first thing you must do when you are fixing these problems, is to find the source of the leak. Upon examining the basement wall, if you find a collection of mold or mildew growing on a part of the wall, there is a leak there where excess water seeps in and feeds the mold. Another way to find out where the leak is coming from is to follow the smell. If there is a musty smell or odor in the air, and its near walls, you have a leak somewhere. Also, examining the walls for instances of discoloration can lead you to the source of the leak. This is because seeping water leaves bright brown stains on your wall when it seeps in. If your walls are leaking, its likely to damage any metal fixtures and wood items by producing excess moisture in the air. Once you have successfully detected that your damp walls are leaking water, you must confirm if it from condensation or seepage. Tape a small piece of aluminum foil to the basement wall and leave it for a few days. When you remove it, if you find moisture on the surface that touched the wall, there is a leak in the wall.

Twip of the Day – Vapor Barrier On Steel
If you have steel walls, you can still put up a vapor barrier to keep moisture out of your basement. Steel walls require mastic and a clean surface in order to apply the waterproofing, so install the mastic and then put up the vapor barrier. You need this vapor barrier because steel walls are still effected by condensation and evaporation, which will quickly change the environment in a building. Be sure to cover the whole wall with the vapor barrier, and make sure it extends to the concrete slab.

Twip of the Day – Interior Vs Exterior Part 2
When it comes to waterproofing your basement, you can finish the job in several ways. There are many pros and cons associated with both interior and exterior waterproofing. In order to choose which is most effective for your situation, we’ll lay out a few of the details. If you find cracks or holes in your foundation wall, it doesn’t matter whether you want to apply interior or exterior waterproofing, you must repair these issues quickly. For interior basement waterproofing you must brush away loose concrete to get a decently pliable surface. You must use concrete to fill the holes and gaps and then smooth it out. Exterior waterproofing only requires you to seal the cracks with a sealant, like epoxy injection. Also, exterior waterproofing offers a “skin shield”, which is when the skin acts as a moisture barrier between cool soil and excess water. This skin becomes rubberized and possesses a honeycomb design. Both interior and exterior waterproofing will utilize waterproofing paint. This paint is applied much like any other paint, and is typically latex based so water doesn’t adhere to it or degrade it over time. No matter which you choose, creating a drainage system for water that does make it through is paramount to having a dry basement. You can achieve this with a downspout. Interior basement waterproofing may be cheaper and easier to apply than exterior, but exterior waterproofing has its advantages too. Choose which type you will use carefully.
